(originally published 1835 in the Southern Literary Messenger)
A man named Pfaall flies to the moon in a balloon! Or does
he? Criticized for its ‘hoax’ ending and rather neglected by readers, this
story is nevertheless interesting in that it is chiefly science fiction—a genre
relatively new at the time, and one in which Poe himself was a principle
pioneer.
Summary written by Taylor Colegrove, May 2011. Title links to the full text of the 1850 version of the story.
