Brown Bag Book Club

This discussion of The Pale Blue Eye is led by Sandi Bandieri. When a suicide victim's body disappears from the West Point Military Academy, detective Gus Landor gets called in to investigate. When a new cadet, Edgar Allan Poe, approaches Landor with his theory that the man they are looking for is a poet, the duo begins to narrow down suspects all the while dealing with their own personal demons. The book group will be reading The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl in addition to The Murders in the Rue Morgue a short story by Poe considered to be the world's first detective story. Poe Lives On: Modern Uses of His Life & Work

A book discussion of Entombed by Linda Fairstein in conjunction with a reading of Poe's poem, "The Raven" and his short story, "The cask of Amontillado". The group will discuss the use of the poem as well as the short story in the modern novel and how Poe's work has informed many aspects of modern culture and literature. We will also watch a clip from "The Simpson's" TV show where the poem was used and discuss other areas of modern culture where participants may have seen Poe's continued influence.

Lizzie Borden Took an Axe... Or Did She?

Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of the first murder mystery stories ever published, sixty years before Lizzie Borden's case electrified the nation. In 1892 Lizzie Borden, a 32 year old single woman, was officially charged with the murder of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. The events that followed the murder would stir the curiosity of people across the nation. After four official criminal proceedings, Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the murder. The case is a mystery that has inspired documentaries, television movies, plays, musicals, poems, a scholarly journal, and law school case studies. This presentation is designed to review the facts and explore evidence that some suggest point to Lizzie’s guilt and others say exonerate her.

Create a Poe Sculpture

Children 10 and up are invited to join a sculpture project, making small paper mache replicas of icons from Poe's writings such as ravens or gold bugs. When completed, the sculptures will be placed around town in local businesses as part of a family scavenger hunt to take place on Oct. 27th.
