(originally published May 1835 in Southern Literary Messenger)
A very short story about a nose expert.
(originally published anonymously in September 1835 in Southern Literary Messenger, later called "Shadow - A Parable")
This is a very short story about a group of Greeks gathered
in a depressing room mourning a dead friend. Their anxious and despairing moods
are sharply contrasted by their “hysterical” laughing and drinking. As their
bizarre cheerfulness wears off, they become acutely aware of a sudden
horrifying shadow looming, which seems to them to speak “in the well-remembered
and familiar accents of many thousand departed friends”.
