Tales: King Pest

(originally published anonymously as “King Pest the First.” Published September 1835 in Southern Literary Messenger)

This story is a strange mix of humor and horror. Two sailors drink more than they can afford and decide to make a run for it. Drunk as they are, they end up in a cordoned-off part of town (it has become contaminated with the plague). They enter an undertaker's shop, where a strange party of six is busy getting drunk off of left behind-wine. There the two drunken sailors get themselves into even more trouble...

Summary written by Taylor Colegrove, May 2011. Title links to the full text of the story.
